What Contagion Do You Carry?

“Contagious” is an adjective describing anything that grows bigger by human interaction, having an impact on human life.

Right now, people are worried about the Coronavirus because it is so contagious. Combined with the fear of not knowing very much about this new disease and not knowing where it is or who might have it, fear, anxiety, and even hysteria are impacting our lives more than ever these days. Yes, fear, anxiety, panic and hysteria are also contagious. Will you contribute to the spread of these things?

You may not have COVID-19 in your body, but the toxins produced by fear and panic are perhaps even worse because of the long-lasting effects they can have on your body, heart, and mind.

Kindness is contagious.

“No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees the greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.” Amelia Earhart

The employees at my part-time job share a group chat. A couple of days ago, one of our members posted the following:

Does anyone know someone who needs help shopping? I’m offering to go to the grocery or pharmacy or wherever – to help out someone who is in self-quarantine.

Following that came a slew of similar posts:

  • Great idea!
  • I’m in, too! Count me in – I’ll go shopping with you.
  • Ohhh, you are so sweet! I wanna be more like u.

Joy is contagious.

We all know someone who can light up a room just by walking in. That’s being witness to the joy contagion. And we’ve all experienced having a bad day lightened by the joy of a stranger.

The other day I was standing in line at the grocery store and the kid in front of me had his head down at the phone in his hand. Even though I didn’t see what he saw, but I was moved by the giggle that shook his body by the silly video he had on his phone. I too, giggled, touched by the spontaneous expression of joy he shared, though he had no idea that his laughter had spread to me.

“Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy and serenity.” Thich Nhat Hanh

Love is contagious.

We come from love. At our very core, we are love. We have been loved, and therefore, we love.

“Look for the inner ANGEL in yourself. Doing good and spreading JOY can be as natural here on Earth as it is in Heaven. Sharing our LOVE is not only easy to do, it is what we are meant to do.” Angie Karan

We are all impacted by those around us. We also have the power to impact others. Many things are contagious: COVID-19, panic, fear; loving kindness, laughter, love.

What contagion will you pass on?
