Lotus Yoga Off The Mat Challenge
Day Five: Yoga for Yin:

How does yoga help you channel your inner calm?

I am mostly a peace-maker. If called upon to intervene in conflict, I aim to facilitate compromise. But if I’m a the target of the conflict, I’m baffled.

Recently I was in a difficult situation at my school. It got to the point that I dreaded going to work. I stressed over what might happen each day, my blood pressure rising as the car got closer and closer to the school.

Then one day, I had a “yoga off the mat” epiphany. I read recently that forward bends help promote calmness, so on my drive to work, I practiced various confrontation scenarios in my head, each one ending with me going from mountain pose to a forward bend and just hanging there until the focus of the conflict walked away, completely perplexed. The more I thought about it, the funnier it became. The giggles, as well as the forward bend plan, were private, but the result was the channeling of my inner calm.

And the most beautiful part is that with inner calm, I also reclaimed my dignity and inner strength.

How does yin yoga help you to tap into your inner calm in stressful situations?

I’d love to hear your stories of yoga and inner calm!
