Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a kind of massage that works with pressure points. The body has lines of energy called meridians and the pressure points are on these lines. The body can become sick when there is a blockage in the flow of energy through these meridians. By applying pressure to specific places on the meridians, the natural and healthy flow of energy returns to the body and it can then heal itself.

How does Shiatsu work?

Shiatsu is especially good at relieving stress and fatigue. There are many stressors in life and while we know what the obvious ones are, there are also many subtle causes of stress that we do not even recognize. For example, florescent lights, constant noise, and even additives in our food can cause stress to the body. All these stressors make the body feel tired. A good night’s sleep is important, but that alone is not always enough. Therefore, many people find that Shiatsu is a wonderful way to clear away stress and re-energize the body.

In addition, constant stress can have a negative impact on health. In particular, unmanaged stress effects the heart and if you do not manage it, that stress on the heart can lead to cardiovascular disease. Therefore, regular Shiatsu treatments can clear the body of stress and keep the body strong and functioning well.

What can I expect in a Shiatsu session?

The therapist uses hands, knees, and elbows, to apply various degrees of pressure, depending on the needs of the client. Therefore, you will not feel pain, though you will feel tender in the areas where energy is blocked. The practitioner will also combine stretching and other movements with the client.
